What To Include In A Powerful Tech Resume
India is a global powerhouse when it comes to the IT sector. Even when there may be a shortage of jobs in other areas of the economy, there are IT sector jobs in India aplenty. There are jobs for freshers and experienced IT professionals alike. But the abundance of IT jobs in India also means that multiple candidates are applying for the same position. This makes it harder for recruiters and job portals in India to identify the right candidate.
Your resume is most often the first point of contact that you have with a recruiter or a job portal. As the saying goes, “your first impression is your last impression.” Therefore it becomes doubly important that you have a good Tech resume in place if you are targeting IT sector jobs in India.
Every resume for the IT sector should, at the very least, include the following:
- Name and Contact Information
- Executive Summary
- Work Experience
- Education
- Other Skills
Name and Contact Information
Recruiters have very little time in which they have to accept or reject a resume, and the very first thing they notice is the candidate name and contact information. These details should, therefore, be in bold and in a larger font at the top of your resume. Many job portals in India automatically filter on location, so do ensure that you put in your complete address and contact details.
Executive Summary
An executive summary should ideally be one or two sentences, not more. It should include a compelling career objective or a personal summary that tells the recruiter why you’d be the best fit for the IT sector role you are applying for. As we said before, recruiters have very little time, and the executive summary can be a great way to grab their attention.
Work Experience
Your actual work experience should clearly indicate the companies you have worked for, the duration you were there, and your designation in those roles. They should be in descending order, starting with the most recent. Be sure to follow the SMART methodology when you are writing about your achievements – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-based.
Education
If you are an experienced individual, then your achievements on the job will get more importance than your education. But companies offering jobs for freshers will be willing to look for school accomplishments and projects. If you have a degree from a venerated institution or have taken courses relevant to the job profile, you should highlight them here.
Other Skills
Many candidates ignore this section, which might be a bad idea. ‘Other Skills’ is a good section to include your other tech skills, hobbies, or activities that portray your leadership experience or teamwork.
Resume writing is an art. You should consider it as an opportunity to get yourself to the next phase of the interview process – a follow-up call or an actual interview.
