Job Description

The Web Developer configures and administers the web content management system, and plans and maintains the technical foundation for the college website and web servers. The Web Developer works collaboratively with staff in Information Technology Services to monitor and configure web server infrastructure. This position monitors web systems for performance and standards compliance and provides leadership for data sharing across systems in support of digital engagement strategies. The Web Developer also designs, develops, and supports web applications that serve the needs of the Macalester community and enable effective online communications for the college’s outreach, marketing, and recruitment efforts.

Responsibilities

Configure, maintain, extend, and administer the web content management system for content authoring and content delivery.

 

Develop, enhance, and maintain the technical infrastructure for web services at Macalester including web server configuration, development environments, and content delivery networks.

 

Provide technical leadership for data integration services and data sharing across systems to support content strategies for web and digital services.

 

Resolve technical issues with web applications, web servers, and web content. Monitor web systems for performance management and security compliance. Lead efforts to bring website and web applications into compliance with accepted standards for web accessibility.

 

Perform design, prototyping, testing, and development tasks for new web applications and enhancements to existing web applications. Develop and maintain technical documentation. Provide troubleshooting and support for users of these applications.

 

Keep current with latest trends and best practices in web development and web services.

Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to work both cooperatively and independently in a team-based work setting. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a strong service orientation.

 

Proven success in managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changing priorities. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to identify, evaluate, and apply new technologies.

 

At least 2 years of professional experience (or a demonstrated equivalent) developing and maintaining web systems and web applications. Associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

Experience with administration and configuration of web content management systems. WordPress development experience preferred.

 

Ability to manage the Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) stack underlying WordPress, from system updates to task scheduling.

 

Demonstrated experience creating dynamic web interfaces and web applications using server-side technologies such as PHP and/or Python (Django). Familiarity with fundamental concepts of relational databases (especially MySQL and PostgreSQL) and proficiency with SQL queries preferred. Experience working with Web Services, JSON, and/or RESTful API integrations also preferred.

 

Some experience with devising, deploying, and maintaining automated web development operations (DevOps) systems. Node.js, Bash, and Git experience preferred.

 

Proficiency with JavaScript (and its associated HTML and CSS) and awareness of common JavaScript frameworks. Vue development experience and responsive web design experience preferred.
