Grand Canyon Education (GCE) is an educational service company that provides an array of support services in the post-secondary education sector. Formerly part of Grand Canyon University (GCU), GCE still supports and works closely with GCU. GCE designs and develops educational programs fU and other traditional campus institutions, as well as online partner institutions at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.

Grand Canyon Education is currently seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) who is open-minded, adaptable, loves challenges and looks forward to working hands-on. This position plays a key role in maintaining critical technical, communications and collaboration with the other IT teams that ensure internal and external customers receive the highest level of quality services. They are also responsible to ensure data services remain highly available 24x7x365 on all GCE environments. The ideal candidate has strong database management experience in a fast-paced enterprise environment serving high visibility customers. This individual requires the ability to work closely with others, follow instructions, manage their time, and complete projects. They should also be able to adjust quickly to change and adapt to our DevOps culture which is focused on developing and leveraging automation.

Responsibilities:

• Leads and assists with customer projects that requires communicating with various leaders on expectations. Works closely with team members to assign and balance the workload to ensure deliverables are met.
• Strategic thinker who can plan for long term growth while simultaneously maintaining short term business deliverables.
• Streamlining and consolidating resources using virtualization or other methods to become more efficient, lower costs, and improve time-to-market.
• Experienced in Database design, architecture, and administration of various databases technologies such as MS SQL 2016/2019, MySQL, AOAG, Replication, Archiving and Data Analytics.
• Supporting and building data pipelines for data scientists, machine learning and data analytics.
• Open-minded and able to see and adapt to new ideas that take advantage of cloud and virtual resources for quick out-of-the-box solutions.
• Responsible for the development and maintenance of processes and standards that ensure uptime and consistency across business and customer facing services.
• Manage proactive alerting and proper escalation procedures to minimize customer downtime or interruptions.
• Identify gaps and areas for improvement and work closely with other change-agents to implement resolutions.
• Create baselines and system comparisons to focus on growth capacity scenarios and proactively address the company’s data growth and system performance needs.
• Responsible for assisting and leading troubleshooting efforts and ensuring team members are focused on the correct areas while communicating with all parties involved.
• Excellent communications within the team, customers, and with other leadership members including executives.
• The ability to design and maintain a disaster recovery strategy that includes the daily backup of all key systems and the proper measures to restore in the event of individual system failures.
• Research and recommend innovative, automated solutions that leverage DevOps solutions for quick and repeatable service delivery.
• Serve as an escalation point for investigation and troubleshooting of production issues.
• Able to provide after hours on-call support as required to ensure GCE’s customers are always supported.
• Oversee the planning of ongoing performance tuning, leveraging of virtualization, and resource optimizations as required.
• Provides metrics and analytics to the business on the health of the technologies.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (computer science, information technology, etc.) from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent work experience, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science.
• 7+ years of relevant technical experience in a large, enterprise environment
• An equivalent combination of directly related work experience and education may be substituted upon supervisor’s approval.
• High level technical expertise combined with excellent planning, coordination and communications skills as well as the ability to lead teams.
• In-depth technical knowledge of current database management and administration.
• Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent project management techniques including planning, organizing, time management and financial management.
• Highly self-motivated and directed with a keen attention to detail and willingness to assume responsibility.
• Ability to interpret complex technical information.
• Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Any technical certifications a plus.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) to facilitate delivery of IT solutions for business needs.
• Strong technical understanding of enterprise computing solutions including DevOps, cloud hosting and architectural design and oversight responsibilities.
