The City of Boston’s Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) is seeking a project manager with a network engineering background or demonstrated experience managing technical projects within a large enterprise network or service provider environment.
The city owns and operates a DWDM optical backbone with an IP/MPLS service layer that connects more than 300 city department locations. Candidates familiar with network operations and having a strong functional understanding of IP network technologies including switching, routing, MPLS, and optical layer topologies are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be responsible for project planning, execution, reporting, and completion. This position requires effective leadership and communication skills, coupled with an ability to assess, prioritize, and synchronize project resources and activities. DoIT network projects require cross-functional coordination of equipment vendors, network services, optical fiber providers, with multiple city departments and locations.
Manages, plans, organizes, and controls all operations and activities of large IT projects at varying levels of complexity.
-Oversee multiple projects to ensure proper management
-Create and maintain project plans
-Ensure that users and project team members roles and responsibilities are defined
-Coordinate and monitor activities to ensure project is completed on time and within budget
-Ensures that user requirements, deliverables and approvals are defined and documented
-Communicate project status
-Promote use of PMI best practices
-Ensure the delivery of a product that meets user requirements
-Excellent communication with documentation skills
- functional understanding of IP network technologies including switching, routing, MPLS, and optical layer topologies
-Understanding of large (enterprise) network build outs and technical terminology
