JUNIOR NETWORK ENGINEER

Network Engineering is part of a Network Operations Team that provides network services to campus faculty, staff, students, and guests. Network Engineering and Net Ops is part of Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) Division in the Department of Office of Information Technology (OIT) providing centralized support services and partnering with campus faculty, researchers, and staff.

Under the supervisions of the Manager, Network Engineering in the Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Junior Network Engineer will provide Network Engineering Services in the field to support wireless and wired edge devices. This includes troubleshooting, being a resource for break/fix repairs, monitoring of production environments, on-call duties to support field tech activities and work on network service requests as assigned. Primary responsibility will be to support production break/fix environment such as edge switches, wireless access points, fiber interfaces, circuit troubleshooting and resolve customer problems. Monitor the Service-Now queue, self-assign tickets from the queue, contact customers as needed to collect additional information, work on tickets and update tickets with timely and descriptive commentary of details, issues, troubleshooting and resolution. Escalate tickets with informative steps taken within Network Engineers or the appropriate OIT group. Repair or replace edge switches, blades and access points including working with other engineers for data center equipment, port activations, port level troubleshooting, uplink troubleshooting. Work on projects as assigned, ability to track hours, provide tasks time estimates, hardware estimates, deliverable dates and include costs related to cost recovery. Provide onsite support for events with wired and wireless network connectivity.

Required:

  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience, with a BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Ability to work with, configure and restore Cisco Edge switches in standalone or stackable configurations.
  • Ability to understand the difference between a unicast and multicast packet.
  • Ability to understand Domain Name Service services, type settings and expected results.
  • Knowledge of well-known ports such for services such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SFTP, DNS, Telnet and SSH.
  • Significant knowledge of Cisco Switches, Routers and Firewalls.
  • Demonstrated skill to complete projects in an organized and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated skill to work and contribute effectively within a team environment and pass on technical knowledge to other Network Operations (NetOps) team members.
  • Represent OIT to all of UCI in a professional manner.
  • Skills and knowledge ‘s not explicitly referenced above necessary to perform all major tasks and duties in the job description.
  • Experience and understanding of Bind DNS Administration.
  • Basic knowledge of enterprise networking including TCP/IP, Ethernet and OSI 7-layer model.
  • Basic Knowledge of troubleshooting network issues for wired and wireless devices with an emphasis on Windows and Apple systems.

Preferred:

  • Cisco Certifications of CCNA or higher.
  • Ability to upgrade edge switches and routers.
  • Ability to restore edge switch configuration to edge switch.
  • Ability to troubleshoot Layer 2 connectivity issues between network devices and network switches. Ability to install, configure as necessary and label wireless access points.
  • Ability to understand Layer 3 subnets, subnet masks, gateway address, IP helpers.
  • Knowledge of routing protocols, static routes.
  • Ability to trace routes from end node to end node in a multi-hop Layer 3 environment.
  • Knowledge of IPV6, VSS, STP, VLANS, VRF.
