The Health Science Technology (HST) department at the University of Minnesota seeks a Database Developer to support data integration, data warehousing, and other database development efforts for schools and units within the University of Minnesota’s health sciences community and beyond, in support of various operational, decision making, strategic, and research initiatives. This position will be responsible for the development, support, and continuous improvement and expansion of data warehousing and data integration solutions. Ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate a solutions-focused, positive approach to problem-solving with the ability to work well both collaboratively and independently, and with the ability to effectively manage expectations and competing priorities. Ideal candidates will have excellent technical, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as a passion for the University’s mission of research, education, and outreach.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Data warehouse development and support (70%)
    • Create target data models and identify, develop, and document accurate source-to-target database mapping logic for the development of a data warehouse and for other efforts.
    • Develop and optimize SQL statements, stored procedures, and views using industry best practices for security and efficiency.
    • Conduct performance optimization, including query tuning, process structuring/scheduling, schema adjustments, code refinements, and scaling analysis.
    • Set up and execute extract, transformation and load (ETL) functions.
    • Conduct data integration efforts, write scripts to pull data using API calls or web services into database schemas, and set-up CRON jobs to run scripts.
    • Develop and review standards and guidelines for the creation, maintenance and use of the data warehouse.
    • Create, document, and execute test plans/test cases/scripts to validate data models, metadata, and completeness and accuracy of data.
    • Monitor systems to ensure data warehouse is running at peak performance; remediate failures of automated jobs quickly.
    • Develop and manage methods to create, store, and maintain metadata for usage tracking, interoperability, and comprehensive management of business semantics.
  • Requirements analysis and documentation (20%)
    • Assist in the research and selection of tools, products, and frameworks to support business initiatives.
    • Meet with clients to elicit and understand requirements, translate business processes and definitions into data terms, and facilitate shared understanding of data definitions among multiple stakeholders.
    • Work with various stakeholders to identify correct data source(s) and analyze source data to understand and document data structure, definitions, accuracy, and anomalies.
    • Develop and maintain technical design, metadata, and business definition documentation.
  • Project coordination and other duties as assigned (10%)
    • Research, understand, and apply appropriate governance and compliance requirements (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA) and digital accessibility best practices.
    • Develop and manage work estimates, expectations, and project plans including priorities, deliverables, timelines, and coordination of efforts including scheduling and facilitation of meetings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with data warehousing and manipulation/ETL (extract, transformation and load).
  • Experience developing PL/SQL and/or T-SQL, stored procedures, indexes, partitioning, and database tuning.
  • Experience working with ETL tools (e.g., Pentaho, SQL Server Integration Services, IBM Datastage).
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, PL/SQL, Ruby, Shell scripting).
  • Knowledge of API’s and web services.
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git).
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills and close attention to detail.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Linux server administration
  • Experience with Tableau
  • Understanding of data governance
  • Understanding of business analysis and/or project management methodologies
